Troubleshooting
The client won't start
- Make sure you have a working Java installation — Rift needs a JVM to run.
- Check whether your antivirus quarantined any files after install. Third-party clients are sometimes flagged incorrectly; you may need to allow the Rift executable explicitly.
- Delete the
~/.riftcache directory and relaunch. This clears any corrupted local state without touching your settings in~/.runelite.
Sign-in problems
Always launch through the Rift launcher, not the client directly. The launcher handles both sign-ins — your Rift account (Discord) and your Jagex account — and sets up the session correctly before the client starts. Launching the client on its own is a common cause of sign-in and plugin-loading failures. If your Rift sign-in won't complete, make sure your browser finishes the Discord login and returns to the launcher.
A plugin isn't loading
- Confirm you're signed into the right Rift account and that the plugin shows as unlocked and enabled on your account page.
- Premium plugins stop loading once their access expires — check the plugin's status on your account.
- Restart the client through the launcher so it re-checks your plugins.
- If it still won't load, grab your log (below) and reach out on Discord.
Where are the logs?
Client logs live at ~/.runelite/logs/client.log.
Reporting a bug
Head to Discord (discord.gg/riftclient) and post in the support channel. Include:
- The relevant section of
~/.runelite/logs/client.log - Which plugin or action triggered the problem
The more context you give us, the faster we can track it down.
